About Business Under Par Print E-mail

Business Under Par: Success Through Golf is a content-driven, multi-media enterprise about real world and philosophical golf and business issues that educates, inspires and entertains readers through a newspaper column (in In Business Las Vegas), a website and various partnership links.

Business Under Par: Success through golf. If you read the column and peruse the website, I guarantee you will be successful in business, and you will become a much better golfer. That’s all you have to do!

Besides, of course, work hard, stay dedicated, listen, learn, practice, plan and be pure of purpose!

This website and column isn’t the place for you if you’re looking to become an overnight success. There is no such thing. Even the people who seem to sky rocket to brilliance have a long history of hard work, dedication and effort. But they all stuck with the plan, stayed pure of purpose and finally took advantage of the opportunities presented. Tiger Woods didn’t get to be who he is without years of disciplined practice and planning. Same with Bill Gates or any other successful person.

If you’re already successful, Business Under Par will give you insights into golf and business that maybe you missed. And no matter how successful you are, everyone needs some inspiration now and again.

Business Under Par: Success Through Golf is written by me, Brian Hurlburt, the former co-founder of VegasGolfer Communications, Inc. In 1996, I, along with a partner (Greg Frey) and some investors created what is today VegasGolfer Magazine, a respected regional golf publication that Reveals Las Vegas as the World’s Most Exciting Golf Destination.

Over the last decade I have listened, learned and experienced plenty in golf and the business world. And have seen firsthand how the two intertwine. I am very fortunate to be in the position to bring the thoughts and knowledge from those who have achieved greatness to you.

My experience includes the gamut of business and golf. I went through partnership difficulties, merged two companies, watched as bills piled up, and sold a business too soon.

I helped create a junior golf program that has saved lives, helped developed the first consumer arena golf show in Las Vegas—Golf Fest Vegas--and several other first-ever golf events in the city including The VegasGolfer Pro Golf Showdown and the VegasGolfer Fairway Awards, and watched first-hand as Tiger Woods won his first PGA Tour event at the Las Vegas Invitational in 1996.

At times, I have not made tough decisions quickly enough and learned the negative impact that indecision can have on businesses and organizations. I have also watched as friends or business associates have misused my trust and loyalty for their gain. And I have watched as good-hearted humans selflessly gave of themselves for the good of others.

I have also listened or learned from many of the biggest names--and also some people that aren't as notable but still very good at what they do-- in golf and the business world including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Patty Sheehan, Jim Colbert, Po Bronson, Stephen Covey, Andy Andrews, Robert Kiyosaki, Charlie Baron, Eric Dutt, Russ Hurlburt, Michael Saltman, Michael Carr and Brian Greenspun. I have had personal conversations with many of the above—both Nicklaus and Palmer personally posed for exclusive VegasGolfer Magazine cover photos--or read their books. Plus I have played golf with such successes as Greg and Mike Maddux, Kevin James, Craig Barlow, Natalie Gulbis, Ryan Moore, Greg Anthony and a host of other notable names.

Because of this, it is a natural for me to combine the golf and business worlds in a way that is designed to entertain, inspire and educate. For more detail on why you should embrace the culture of golf read this: The Lasting Impression Of Golf

Golf is a game of giving and taking, both on the course and off. You need perseverance, dedication and passion to be successful. And you need to give of yourself to truly be rewarded.

I don’t claim to know everything about what will make you be—or continue to be—successful, but I do know that the bond shared during a round of golf is indelible, and many of the attributes needed for success in business and life are also needed on the golf course. Golf makes a person humble, and being humble--but confident--allows a person to maneuver through the world and make an impact.

Above all else, this column will bring insights to you from a wide range of knowledgeable people. I am just a conduit to share their views. Thank you to all of them for sharing their time and knowledge, and thank you for spending the time reading these articles.

“And if you play golf, you’re my friend,” says the late, great golf instructor Harvey Penick. He was—and still is—right.
