Here’s how you can be like Tiger Woods Print E-mail

“I know what I want to accomplish and I know how to get there. The ultimate goal is to be the best.” Tiger Woods.

Face it, you don’t have the talent of Tiger Woods, and you’re never going to win the U.S. Open or the LPGA Championship. You may never even win the company scramble, country club member guest or ever come close to breaking par. But you can still be just like Tiger Woods in a way that will be very meaningful in your life.

And if you dedicate yourself to being like Tiger in this way, you will most likely reach all of your business, personal and financial goals.

There is no doubt that Tiger is the most talented player on the PGA Tour, but what sometimes is overlooked is that he is also the “best” worker. Make sure you note that I didn’t say hardest (although he might be) worker. I said “best” worker. Tiger is the most focused person on the PGA Tour, and for my money, the most focused person in all of sports. And he makes a good case for being the most focused person on the face of the Earth.

You can be just like Tiger if you devote as much passion and dedication to your personal plan as he does to his.

Watch him when he plays, practices or talks to the media. Everything is done with purpose and there is no wasted motion or effort. He has a plan, and he executes it every day of his life, and on every swing of his golf clubs. He knows where he is going and exactly what it will take to get there.

He is also successful off the course as a business person, and has started charitable efforts that are impacting millions of children. And he is a newlywed. There is only one way he keeps everything together: he has a plan a plan and executes it nearly flawlessly.

Emulating Tiger off the course, and how he prepares for a shot on the course, can help us all. You don’t need amazing talent to stick to your personal plan. All you need is dedication, determination and desire. Sticking to a plan is nothing more than creating that plan and working hard—and working best—to stick to it. Sure, plans are tough to determine and create, but if you can dig deep and find your mission and passion, and then stick to it, everything else will fall into place.

Do you think Tiger would be what he is today if he didn’t have a plan? He would probably still be a great player, but not the greatest ever, and on his way to re-writing every record in the golf books. And even when he started becoming successful (he won the U.S. Amateur three times) he still sought out ways to improve himself, knowing that a great plan needs to be fluid. The end goals may stay the same, but how to get there can change as circumstances evolve.

He won the Masters—his first major and a goal in his plan--in 1997 by a record 12 strokes, but then decided his swing wasn’t up to par. He and Las Vegas resident Butch Harmon totally revamped it. You may be hugely successful, but is there anything in your plan you need to revamp that will allow you even more success and satisfaction? If there is, do you have the guts to change it even though you may be risking everything?

Tiger had the guts and made the changes. Then he went out and won four major tournaments in a row. The public called it the Tiger Slam. As of this writing, he had won 53 PGA Tour events and a dozen majors, but every day he still looks to improve and work his plan to the very best of his best ability.

What do you need to be doing to accomplish your own, personal Slam?

Golf world challenge: You are stuck trying to figure out how to buy new clubs.

Solution: Talk to a few pros or good players, but be sure to describe your personal golf goals. There is a wide variety of options and price points, and you need to decide how serious you will be taking the game. A good and wise pro should be able to guide you. The PGA of America is always looking to help grow the game, and club advice is one way they can provide assistance.
